When we talk about Indian civilisation and culture, it appears to be revolving around Vedic culture and four basic texts of Vedic culture - Rigveda, Atharvaveda, Yajurveda and Samaveda. These texts consider the omnipresent formless form of God. Rivers have had considerable importance in Indian civilization and culture. Perhaps this is why we also call the Indian social culture as ‘Ganga-Jamuni culture’ or ‘Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb’.

Hence, we can say that the features of any civilisation like urban development, social stratification, specialization of labour, centralized organization, and written or other formal means of communication are revolving around rivers and its valley. This is because a river gives the inhabitants a reliable source of water for drinking and agriculture.
