One of the very famous and veteran playback singers of Hindi and Bengali cinema Manna Dey was conferred with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2007 for his outstanding contribution in the field of cinema. Trained in classical traditions, his voice won him millions of admirers in India and abroad. He was adept at not only rendering complex classical music-based songs, ‘qawwalis’ and ‘ghazals’ but also light fun-laced numbers, romantic songs and ‘bhajans’. Some of the songs that scaled the popularity charts include ‘Laga Chuneri mein daag’, ‘Pyaar hua iqraar hua’, ‘Ye raat bheegi bheegi’, and ‘Kasme wade pyaar wafa’. Manna Dey, along with Mukesh, Mohammad Rafi and Kishore Kumar, formed the famous quartet who ruled the Indian film industry between the 1950s and ‘70s. The Government had also honoured him with the Padma Shree and later the Padma Bhushan in 2005. The prestigious Dadasahed Phalke Award is an annual prize given by the government for the lifetime contribution in the field of Indian cinema.
