Krishnam Raju Biography: Krishnam Raju, a well-known Telugu actor of the sixties and seventies and the former Union Minister for Defence and External Affairs passed away on September 11, 2022, while undergoing treatment after a brief illness at AIG Hospital at around 3.30 am. Krishnam Raju was 83 years old and is survived by his wife and three daughters. Apart from being a renowned name in the film industry, Krishnam Raju was elected to Lok Sabha in 1998 and again in 1999 on a BJP ticket. He was a Union Minister of State for four years during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s last term as the Prime Minister of India from 1999-2004.

Uppalapati Venkata Krishnam Raju was born on January 20, 1940 to Uppalapati Veera Venkata Satyanarayana Raju. Film Producer U. Suryanarayana Raju is his younger brother and actor Prabhas is his nephew. Krishnam Raju at one time worked as a journalist for the Andhra Ratna and was also awarded with the Second Best Photographer at the State level.

Krishnam Raju was fond of cameras and had a collection of cameras. He was also the owner of Gopi Krishna Movies.

Krishnam Raju first married Seeta Devi who passed away and later married Syamala Devi in 1996, with whom he has three daughters- Sai Praseedha, Sai Pradeepti, Sai Prakeerti.

Krishnam Raju Acting Career

Krishnam Raju entered Tollywood in 1966 with the film Chilaka Gorinka which was directed by Kotayya Pratyagatma alongside Krishna Kumari. His debut film won Nandi Award for Best Feature Film- Silver for that year, however, it did not produce the expected result. In 1967, Krishnam Raju acted in the mythological film Sri Krishnavataram which also stars N.T. Rama Rao.

Krishnam Raju in 1968 appeared in Nenante Nene. Reportedly, he was reluctant at first to act in the film given the role is of the antagonist and that he had debuted in the film as a protagonist. Upon being advised by his peers and the co-actors to gain exposure to a diversified character, Krishnam Raju took on the role and the movie came out to be successful

Krishnam Raju acted in films with established actors including Akkineni Nageswara Rao and N.T. Rama Rao.  He also worked with established actresses- Jamuna, Kanchana, Krishna Kumari, and Rajasulochana.
