Shivkumar Sharma Biography: Birth, Age and Education
Shivkumar Sharma was born in a family of singers. His father Uma Dutt Sharma was a singer. He taught him vocals and tabla at the age of five.
At the age of thirteen, Sharma started learning santoor - an instrument he later mastered in. He gave his first performance in Mumbai in 1955.
Shivkumar Sharma: Wife and Children
Shivkumar Sharma was married to Manorama. The couple gave birth to two children-- Rahul and Rohit.
His son Rahul began learning Santoor at the age of 13. The father-son duo have given several performances together since 1996. In an interview in 1999, Shivkumar revealed that he chose Rahul as his Shishya because he believed he had the gift of God.
Shivkumar Sharma Career
Shivkumar Sharma who is accredited for taking the stringed instrument to the global stage started his career in 1955. A year later, he composed the background music for one of the scenes in Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje. He recorded his first solo album in 1960.
He collaborated with flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia and guitarist Brij Bhushan Kabra for the concept album Call of the Valley in 1967. The album is one of the greatest hits in Indian classical music.
He teamed up with flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia and composed music for many Hindi films since the 1980s. The duo soon came to be known as the Shiv-Hari duo. Some of their musical hits are the films Faasle, Chandni, Lamhe, and Darr.
