    An earthquake is the shaking of the surface of the Earth, resulting from the sudden release of energy in the Earth's lithosphere that creates seismic waves.     An earthquake is the shaking of the surface of the Earth, resulting from the sudden release of energy in the Earth's lithosphere that creates seismic waves. It is also known as a quake, tremor or temblor.

    The theory of Plate Tectonics states that the lithosphere consists of several individual segment called plates. About twenty such plates have been identified in which Pacific plate is the largest plate and Juan de Fuca Plate is the smallest one. Plates margin are three types- Divergent, Convergent and Transform fault boundaries. Most of the seismic activity occurs along these dynamic margins.

    Magnitude: 7.5

    3. Aleppo, Syria

    Deaths: About 230,000
