A port is a maritime commercial facility which may comprise one or more wharves (platform built out from the shore into the water and supported by piles; provides access to ships and boats) where ships may dock to load and discharge passengers and cargo. It is derived from Latin word “Portus” which means “port, harbour”. Today, Asia is becoming a hub in the growth of port development and the majority of the world's largest and busiest ports are located in this continent.
